Legado das Águas is an Atlantic Forest territory located between three municipalities: Miracatu, Juquiá and Tapiraí. A little over 100km from the capital of São Paulo, the use of our area began a long time ago, this way, it keeps rich stories about what we are today.

Let’s check out some curiosities?

In the 1950s, under the direction of José Ermírio de Moraes, Votorantim S.A. entered the energy sector in the region of the Juquiá River water complex. With the foundation and growth of the Companhia Brasileira de Alumínio (CBA), the need to obtain energy caused the company to build and maintain its own hydroelectric plants. In addition to building the plants, the company bought the land around the reservoirs, thus ensuring their water availability.

In 37 years (1949-1986), seven hydroelectric plants were built and investment in energy and forest protection became a differential of Votorantim. With this scenario, the Legacy of the Waters is born.

In 2012, CBA, Nexa, Votorantim Cimentos and Votorantim Energia, joined forces to transform the territory of 31,000 hectares around the plants into the largest Private Atlantic Forest Reserve in Brazil.

The Legado das Águas became a protected area of private character after Votorantim S.A. and the Government of the State of São Paulo signed a protocol signing the intention to perpetuate the protection of the area and its natural resources, with a focus on knowledge generation and environmental conservation, facilitating advances in scientific studies; environmental education; public use; protection of endangered species and socioeconomic development of the region.

In 2017, the Public Use in the Legacy of Waters was implemented. Today there are more than 20 ecotourism activities. See below the story about some of them:

The Figueira Centenária Trail is accessible and has approximately 300 meters. In it we find a suspended garden, on a huge fig tree with many epiphytes (plants that live on others without causing harm). On this tree, there are several species of bromeliads and orchids.

During the trail, we can also observe some orchids that have been relocated, they are attached to the trees with a biodegradable tape. This is one of the works done by the team of our Biodiversity Center. Although falling trees is a natural process, this technique is essential for the perpetuation of species.

Before or after you complete this trail, there is the Sensory Garden where you can sharpen your senses through contact with plants that stimulate touch, smell and even taste.

Pots with molting stevia (Stevia rebaudiana), citronella Cymbopogon winterianus) and Boldo (Plectranthus barbatus) allow us to better understand our senses and train them to be even sharper to pay attention to the immensity of the Atlantic Forest.

At the beginning of the trail, we can see an old house, which indicates the presence of former residents. Right at the entrance, it has a foot of annatto (Bixa Orellana), a plant widely used in cooking.  Further ahead, there is also a very famous tree in the south of the country: the Araucária. Of the native plants that we find in the route stands out, the copaíba (Copaifera trapezifolia), tree that gave name to the trail.

The attraction leads to a viewpoint with a view of 360. At this point, the Reserve is more than 700 altitude relative to sea level and is the only point that has signal from telephone operators. It is the perfect time to share with family and friends the place you are!

In addition, this trail can take you to other points such as Poço do Cambuci and Prainha.

The Jaguar Trail is a self-guided attraction. Its name is due to visual and photographic records of jaguars (Puma concolor) that have already passed through there. Fauna monitoring has already been done that recorded other species such as tapirs (Tapirus terrestrials), irara (Eira Barbara), and crab dogs (Cerdocyon thous).

From the path you can also see the Barra dam, where you can contemplate the size of our forest. For those who like bird watching, at the end of the trail there is an area where you can make beautiful records of the cauré (Falco rufigularis). His favorite place is an embaúba (Cecropia glaziovii), where he is extremely comfortable and does not bother with the presence of people. Sometimes it is possible to witness their hunt.

A trail with many stories.

The name of the trail was chosen because of the centuries old trees that are present on the route. The many fig trees (Ficus gomelleira), copaíbas (Copaifera trapezifolia), Jequitibás (Cariniana estrellensis) and Jatobás (Hymenaea courbaril) make us feel small before their presence.

Interestingly, this fig tree was found “accidentally”, because part of the route is used for monitoring the reserve, but in one of the routine inspections, one of the agents found the fig tree. The position of your torso also draws attention, as it is slightly tilted to the right. Its roots are impressive and show the power and meaning of the word resilience.

The Cambuci Trail is suitable for all ages. More than half of the route has a suspended structure that allows contemplation of the forest. It is also widely used by bird watchers.

The trail is located in an area of secondary forest, where it is possible to see exotic species nearby. This is because in the past there were residents in this region who worked on the construction of existing dams in the territory. Today there are only old houses that can be seen in some parts of the reserve.

On the Cambuci Trail it is also possible to contemplate species that have already been on the verge of extinction.  During the course, we were able to observe the dynamics of a healthy forest, where the existence of some species, such as embaúba and angico, shows how forest regeneration occurs.

At the end of the trail, we find a box of bees native to the Atlantic Forest: the Jataí. It has no stinger and produces a very tasty honey, in addition, one of the characteristics of this species is to “close the door” of the hive, that is, they protect themselves from predators by sealing the entrance at dusk and only open the other day.

The Poço do Cambuci, is a structure that was built to capture water (mini dam) to supply the old village of workers. Currently, the catchment is used for irrigation supply of our plant nursery.

This point became known as “Poço do Cambuci” because of the trees of Cambuci (Campomanesia phaea) that surround it. At the time of fruiting, the fruits fall, which makes it a tasty attraction for animals that transit through there, like tapir.

The trail is 40 minutes from Legacy Base. The origin of its name has some versions ranging from local residents who used that area in December, to a version that says that the opening of this trail took place in December.

The route connects to others, where through them, one can reach the limits of the Reserve. In addition, the route is widely used for environmental monitoring and research.

In this way, we can see traces of intense activity of the animals and at the end of the trail, it is possible to see a beautiful waterfall and take a refreshing bath in its natural pools.

The Tamanduazinho Waterfall is suitable for all ages. With only one kilometer of extension, it has a natural pool where you can refresh yourself. This attraction is at the border between the Legacy of the Waters and the Jurupará State Park, two areas of great importance for the Atlantic Forest ecological corridor present in the region.

The waterfall is also great for those who like an adventure on two wheels. More experienced bikers can enjoy a trail, the Sigletrack do Tamanduazinho, a one-way route, performing a pedal surrounded by the Atlantic Forest, avoiding natural obstacles such as roots, trunks and passing through stretches with small bridges.

Ancient stories tell that these attractions are called Tamanduazinho, because there it was very common to see Tamandua tetradactyla. But there is also the version that the name comes from an old neighborhood that was in these surroundings, not far from the waterfall.

For those who enjoy a refreshing adventure, the Legacy of the Waters has some water activities such as canoeing. Its total route is 9km and that will take you there is a waterfall. There is the option of canoeing and the sound of rowing pushing seems the only sound present, but if you pay attention, you can test your senses and listen to the forest. In addition, it is a sensory experience guided by moonlight.

For those who do not like to paddle, on this same route, it is possible to take a boat ride. The difference is that you can make beautiful records and if you want, get wet.

Another very interesting point of this activity is the Prainha. There is the time to stop to rest a little and enjoy the landscape even more.

Now for those who are on the team of adventurers, rafting is ideal. With 4.7km long, you can contemplate from another view the Atlantic Forest, passing through small rapids, among them the rapids of the algae, where you can observe a wonderful garden of underwater plants. In this same place begins a deep well in which it is possible to enter the water and descend for 100 meters gently floating by the light stream of the river. The lull ends with the arrival of the bridge rapids. This delicious rapids has a big jump in the end that gives a real bath to all participants.
