The Legado – Legado das Águas

We are the largest private Atlantic Forest Reserve in Brazil.

With 31,000 hectares distributed among the municipalities of Juquiá, Miracatu and Tapiraí, in the Ribeira Valley, southern state of São Paulo, we combine forest conservation with the development of scientific research and new economic activities, such as the production of native plants and ecotourism.

We are part of the portfolio of Votorantim, our caretaker, and since our creation in 2012, our goal has been to demonstrate the value of the Atlantic Forest, proving that it is possible to develop sustainable businesses that conserve the area, protect biodiversity and promote new local production chains, generating shared value for the company, society and the environment.

Timeline

– Years 40, 50, and 60: Between 1947 and 1963, Votorantim acquired land for the construction of hydroelectric plants, an area that gave rise to the Legacy of Waters.

– 2012: The founding companies sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of the State of São Paulo, creating the Legado das Águas.

– 2013: Beginning of partnerships with universities and representative institutions of society.

– 2014: First record of the tapir (Tapirus terrestris) albina in the area.

– 2016: Inauguration of the Atlantic Forest Biodiversity Center.

– 2017: Implementation of public use as a front for multiple land use.

–2018: Discovery of a new orchid species in the area (Lepanthopsis legadensis) and registration of the second albino tapir (Tapirus terrestris) in the area.

– 2019: We were recognized as a Global Priority Area for the conservation of the southern muriqui (Brachyteles arachnoides) by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

– 2023: Highlight as one of the main birding hotspots in the Southeast Atlantic Forest at the Global Big Day.
