The Social-Environmental Action of the Legado das Águas has three main areas of focus: Social, Socio-environmental Education, and Scientific Research.
All of these areas have initiatives related to the scope of the Sustainable Development Program (SDP) of Vale do Ribeira, which is the umbrella program for other initiatives developed by the Reserve.
The SDP is all about strengthening the network of partners to tackle the real challenges facing communities, associations, schools, small businesses, and municipal bodies. We use resources (economic and/or financial), local knowledge, and coordination to implement positive impact initiatives.
Since 2014, we’ve been rolling out initiatives in the priority municipalities (Miracatu, Juquiá, and Tapiraí), and we’ve expanded to other cities in the Vale do Ribeira and São Paulo.
The Legado das Águas is all about developing in a sustainable way. We do this by forming strategic partnerships and making social investments that fit with the local area.
So, the work in the municipalities where it operates—Juquiá, Miracatu, and Tapiraí—is based on building relationships with the community and investing in initiatives to strengthen local government.
Over the years, we’ve made it our mission to promote programs, projects, and initiatives that have a positive social impact. We’ve worked with a wide range of social actors, including public bodies, associations, communities, NGOs, institutions, and companies, to make this happen.

Know the programs developed by the Social Environmental Action:
The socio-environmental education actions we carry out are key to raising awareness and getting people involved in protecting the Atlantic Forest and its natural resources.
We connect people with the local environment through different initiatives, such as ecotourism activities, lectures, and awareness campaigns involving both children and adults.
We also encourage reflection on the impact of human actions on nature. In addition, our actions help create a culture of respect and care for our biome, which is important for a more sustainable future for all.

At Legado das Águas, we use scientific research to gain a better understanding of and to conserve our forest and biodiversity.
We see our territory as a natural laboratory for developing sustainable management strategies for natural resources and protecting biodiversity in the Atlantic Forest. That’s why we encourage internal studies, projects in partnership with educational and research institutions, and initiatives based on science-citizen.
We recognize the importance of involving local communities to promote environmental awareness, collect scientific data, and ensure the sustainable use of natural resources, which helps maintain the Atlantic Forest.
